Government has spent 1.34 percent of Gross Domestic Product on higher education during 2013-14, Lok Sabha was informed today. As per publication ‘Analysis of Budgeted Expenditure on Education – 2015’ of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, public expenditure on higher education as a percentage of GDP for the year 2013-14 was 1.34 percent, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said during Question Hour.
During XII five year plan, the plan outlay for the department of higher education was Rs 1,10,700 crore compared with the actual expenditure in XI Plan of Rs 39,646.82 crore. This is an increase of about 2.79 times. This increase in central plan outlay for the education sector presents a determined effort on part of the Centre for raising public spending on higher education, Javadekar said.
