The video calling has been launched for all supported platforms – Android, iOS and Windows Phone – and video calls will be possible across platforms. WhatsApp register over 100 million daily connected voice calls over the app.
“Video calling is one of the most requested features from people in India. We are produce to have the opportunity to launch this feature in India, where we now have 160 million users, and we look for warned to seeing people use WhatsApp to talk to their friends and loved ones face to face,” Jan Koum, CEO and Co-Founder, WhatsApp.
Similar to the voice calling, a new icon for video calls will appear within the app. WhatsApp claims that the experience of video calls will be seamless as users will be able to seamlessly switch between front and rear camera. There is also a preview corner within the app, which can be dragged and placed at anywhere within the window. It even supports multitasking as users can continue to check emails, messages, etc., without disconnecting the video call. WhatsApp also claims to learn from the challenges and improve the experience. Considering data bandwidth still a big issue in the Indian market, WhatApp will adapt to the connection speeds for the call to be working.
Video calling over mobile apps has been there for a while. Even before the WhatsApp video calling, people has been using Skype, Apple’s FaceTime and Google’s Duo.
