American car manufacturer Tesla has given a glimpse of their future design language in the form of their latest Model 3 electric car. The new car, as Tesla calls it, will be a mass market car, which means costs will have to be kept under check. This is primarily the reason why Tesla has decided to take its time with the induction of the Model 3 into the market, as it won’t be launching before the end of 2017.
Despite the far off launch, Tesla has started to accept bookings for the car against a deposit of $1000 or around Rs. 66,000/-. And the response was overwhelming with over 1.15 lakh bookings on the first day itself and 2.53 lakh till date. Such is the popularity of Tesla in its hometown!
Coming to the numbers, the Tesla Model 3 is no mud when it comes to speed even though it’s an electric vehicle, with Tesla promising the 0-100 km/hr dash in 6 seconds, and that too for the base variant of the car! Even when it comes to range, it will be one of the most frugal electric cars with the base variant promised to offer at least 350 kms on a single charge.
The Tesla Model 3 gets an all new design with a completely redesigned front that skips a grill entirely being an electric vehicle and also gets a new set of headlamps. On the interior front, it gets more space so as to fit five adults comfortably, a glass roof as well as a larger tablet screen to improve the usability.
It also gets a very useful autopilot feature but these features will come at quite a heavy price of around $35,000 or Rs. 23 lakh. Tesla has confirmed that the Model 3 will be launched in India although no confirmation on the dates were announced. However, with Tesla having no presence in India and the country having poor infrastructure for electric vehicles, the launch of the Model 3 won’t happen before 2018. The vehicle will come via the CBU route.
